• Basic Coverage (Released Value Protection): All movers must provide this at no charge. It pays just 60 cents per pound per item if something is damaged. For example, a 50-pound TV would only be covered for $30, regardless of its actual value. This minimal coverage rarely provides adequate protection for most household items.
• Full Value Protection: This comprehensive coverage costs extra but offers real peace of mind. “Under Full Value Protection, your mover is responsible for the replacement value of lost or damaged goods in your entire shipment,” states the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Most Cape Cod homeowners choose this option to best protect their belongings.
• Items of Extraordinary Value Declaration: Items worth more than $100 per pound (like fine art, antiques or jewelry) need a special declaration. The FMCSA requires you to list these items separately on your shipping documents to ensure full coverage.
